15 Best Cat Foods For Shedding And Hairballs

Like dogs, cats shed their fur. Shedding serves several important functions for cats, like removing dead fur and getting rid of a heavy undercoat when the temperatures warm up.

However, that shedding can get out of hand in some cats. Excessive shedding in cats can signal an underlying health problem, such as allergies, stress, or poor nutrition.

If your cat is shedding a lot, take them to your veterinarian for a diagnostic workup. Your veterinarian may recommend a change in diet to help get the shedding under control.

Hairballs can also be a problem in cats. These balls of fur can cause blockages in the digestive tract that can be fatal.

We’ve conducted extensive research to help you find the best cat food to manage your cat’s shedding and keep hairballs from becoming a problem.

#1 Primal Turkey Formula Nuggets Grain-Free Raw Freeze-Dried Cat Food

Primal Turkey Formula Nuggets Grain-Free Raw Freeze-Dried Cat Food

These freeze-dried nuggets are primarily composed of turkey muscle meat and organs. Turkey isn’t a top allergen for cats, so it’s a good alternative to chicken, which is a common source of food allergies in cats.

Because 96% of the protein in this recipe comes from animal sources, you know that the recipe is highly-digestible and nourishing for your cat. This recipe isn’t all meat, though. It contains small amounts of organic collard greens, squash, celery, cranberries, and traces of other fruits and vegetables.

These low-carbohydrate plant ingredients make the food nutritionally complete, without the need for adding synthetic vitamins and minerals.

Ingredients:

Turkey, Turkey Necks, Turkey Hearts, Turkey Livers, Organic Collard Greens, Organic Squash, Organic Celery, Cranberries, Blueberries, Organic Pumpkin Seeds, Organic Sunflower Seeds, Montmorillonite Clay, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Sardine Oil, Taurine, Organic Quinoa Sprout Powder, Dried Organic Kelp, Organic Cilantro, Organic Coconut Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Organic Ginger, Vitamin E Supplement, Mixed Tocopherols (Natural Preservative).

#3 Open Farm Pasture-Raised Lamb Dry Food

Buy on Open Farm

Read Our Full Brand Review

Digestibility and quality are key factors in the best cat food for shedding which is why this Open Farm recipe is our top choice for dry food. It features pasture-raised lamb as the primary ingredient with both ocean whitefish meal and herring meal as supplemental sources of animal-based protein.

What Should You Consider When Shopping For Cat Food That Reduces Shedding And Hairballs?

With so many brands of dry and wet cat food, certain brands may differ from one another. Here’s what to consider before purchasing dry or wet cat food:

It’s all about the ingredients – Cat food, whether wet or dry, should contain at least one type of high-quality protein, and that protein should be the first ingredient on the ingredients list. Cat food that contains a lot of artificial flavors, meat by-products, starches, fats, may not provide your cat with optimal nutrition.

Feeding your cat with the best food suited for it will require you to review the ingredients list closely. Remember that the ingredients are listed from most to least abundant. If you’re unsure about the food, your veterinarian can help you make sense of the ingredients list.

Quantity matters–Consider buying smaller cans of food, rather than one big container. Doing so will help the food stay fresher for longer.

Consider the cost- Purchase the best quality cat food that you can afford. Be mindful that an expensive cat food may not be the best food for your cat. Talk with your veterinarian about your cat’s nutritional needs and select the best food for your cat without breaking the bank.

I am interested in foods recommended for cats with excessive grooming and the loss of fur that results. Thank you

Hello Gail, that’s usually a stress-related issue more than a dietary one. Instead of looking for a food specific to your situation, I would focus on the underlying causes of your cat’s excessive grooming while feeding him or her an excellent, all-around high-quality diet.

When will standard medical Veterinarians learn the truth about the ingredients that are in these pet foods and when will they figure out that dry kibble should NEVER be fed to cats? I’m not a Veterinarian but I jave thoroughly researched feline nutrition, how their digestive system works and each and every ingredient in cat and the pros and cons of each. It just irrational to prescribe a cat with kidney disease, crystals in the urine and/or who had blockages or an obese cat “prescription” dry kibble when dry kibble is is most likely the reason they had the issues in the first place! I have a cat who was obese and kept getting bladder infections. Then I started studying feline health and nutrition. I stopped feeding her dry kibble and now she only gets pate or raw. She has lost 50% of her body weight! She is now healthy and has never had a bladder infection again! I’m sorry but your beloved companies like Hills, Royal Canin and Purina are evil greedy liars! Meat by-products, meat meal, corn, wheat, gluten, cellulose, carrageenan should NEVER be in a cats food! You say a cat is an obligate carnivore then say to feed dry kibble with its dried mystery meat. grains and high carbs, fruits etc in the same sentence! There is NO SUCH thing as a high quality dry kibble, period! How can you say its close to what they eat in the wild! Ive never seen wild cats chasing a herd of biscuits, or sitting around a fire roasting their mice and birds or destroying farmer Bobs garden in search of fruit and vegetables. The pet food companies and YOU who endorse these foods are responsible for many of the kidney and bladder probs, the obesity, the diabetes, the IBD in cats and their suffering and early deaths! If you became a Vet because you care about animals and not about money then open your minds, do better research and LISTEN to your Holistic Veterinarian Colleagues! Thank you for reading…
