Animal Fatalities

The deadliest animals and US states revealed

It is often the case that we humans forget that we share a planet with countless different species of animals. This often leads us to be more than a little invasive and dismissive, throwing caution to the wind with these creatures' spaces.

This can, unfortunately, lead to dangerous circumstances where animals feel forced to lash out at us. Go swimming out too far in the ocean, and a shark might mistake you for a quick meal. Venture into the woods, into a bear's territory and they’re likely to be aggressively defensive, especially if they have cubs. Animals in captivity can struggle to acclimate themselves which can lead to an unfortunate series of events.

While the cats that we provide cat food and insurance reviews for are on the smaller, more friendly side, we’re still interested in their more dangerous relatives and other wild animals that can present a danger to humans when they cross paths.

With that said, we have gathered data showing which animals are the most dangerous on the planet and which US states have the most animal-caused fatalities, to show you the major danger spots

USA states with the most fatal exotic animal attacks

In this context, exotic animals refer to those that are rare, not usually native to the country and often rather thought of as wild animals than pets. It is typically not ideal to keep these animals as pets, as they thrive better in their natural habitats. While it might seem cool to keep a rare pet, a domesticated animal such as a cat is better suited for most people.

1

Mosquitos

750,000

Estimated deaths caused (2018)

As of 2018, mosquitos were estimated to be responsible for 750,000 human deaths per annum. However, mosquitos don’t kill humans the same way that many other animals do, i.e. trampling, mauling, etc. When people are bitten by mosquitos they can contract malaria, which if not diagnosed and treated quickly, can result in death. Malaria is most common in areas of Africa and Asia, South America and some Pacific islands. The easiest way to avoid bites from mosquitos is to simply apply insect or mosquito repellent to exposed skin and to avoid peak mosquito hours, which are dawn and dusk. It is also important to take antimalarial tablets before travelling to a country with a high risk of malaria in order to stay healthy even if you are bitten.

2

Snakes

100,000

Estimated deaths caused (2018)

Venomous snakes are terrifying for a lot of us. And some, even with their venom, are colossal in size and strength, capable of seriously injuring a human. They are estimated to cause up to 100,000 human deaths per annum, mostly through venomous bites with most occurrences taking place in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Even people that survive such bites can suffer potentially permanent after-effects and disfigurements. Medical advice for travellers wanting to avoid venomous snake bites is to wear long boots, at least ankle length and never go outside barefoot or in open sandals. You should also be wary around woodland, grassland and even bodies of water. Make sure to use a torch at night to easily see snakes.

3

Dogs

35,000

Estimated deaths caused (2018)

And finally, man’s best friend comes in the last spot for the top three. Some breeds are thought to be more aggressive than others, particularly Pit Bulls, however, more often than not issues of aggression can stem from issues when the dog is younger. A failure in the early stages of training and general treatment of your dog can lead to behavioural problems and aggression later in life. Also, letting your children tug and be rough with your dog isn’t a good idea, even if you’ve never seen signs of aggression before. It’s generally practised that if your dog is prone to biting at a younger age, upon feeling teeth contact on your skin you should release a high-pitched yelp to mimic the sound made by other puppies to indicate that the play has become too rough.

USA states with the most fatal native animal attacks

These are animals that are indigenous to the US, meaning, naturally occurring and as such have not been brought here. Just as with the previous exotic animals, keeping many of these indigenous animals in the States as a pet is not recommended or safe, domesticated animals are always a better choice in this respect.

Man’s best friend comes in first. There are a variety of reasons that can drive dogs to aggression and experts usually conclude the main emotion that causes it is fear. However, this can happen when a dog is protecting something they value or when being territorial. This has resulted in 100 fatal dog attacks between 2020-2022 alone.

2

Bear

61

Total fatalities

The 2015 movie, The Revenant, is a grim reminder that bears still inhabit the United States and they too will defend their territory and cubs if they feel threatened by human presence. Since 1970, there have been 61 fatal bear attacks across the US across 17 states.

3

Snake

57

Total fatalities

Like bears, snakes are common inhabitants in many parts of the United States and as well as that, many people own snakes as pets, doubling the risk of being attacked. This has led to 57 fatal attacks since 1970 across 21 states.

Methodology

We wanted to show the most dangerous animals in the US and worldwide, with a further breakdown by state, and a split between native and exotic animals.

For the exotic animal data, we used Born Free USA to look at instances where exotic animals had fatally attacked a human, dated between 1990-2022.

For the US native animals, we used Wikipedia entries for alligators, bears, cougars, sharks, snakes, dogs and wolves. We went as far back as 1970 for each page, excluding dogs which only included 2000 onwards, due to insufficient data and missing locations for the attacks.

Finally, for the deadliest animals worldwide, we used a 2018 study from Statista which shows the estimated annual deaths various animals cause.
